Hingham Light experiences outage during Lightning
8/2/05
Hingham- A quick moving, intense lightning storm caused customers of the Hingham
Light Plant to experience two separate outages during the overnight hours between
Monday August 1st and Tuesday, August 2nd. The larger outage affecting 1500
customers was caused by a large limb possibly hit by lightning taking down
a wire on the corner of Main and Water Street. The outage occurred at 1:00
AM and was restored within an hour. A second smaller outage on Old Derby Street
affecting 15 customers occurred when a crossarm was hit by lightning causing
a fire on the pole. HMLP crews responded to these and other minor calls during
the overnight hours.
“These types of quick moving rain and lightning storms are fairly common
in New England during the summer months” said John G. Tzimorangas, General
Manager of the Light Plant. “The light plant crews responded quickly
and were able to keep up with the calls throughout the night. These lightning
storms can strike almost anywhere and can cause some significant damage in
a very short period of time”, said Tzimorangas.
